About Us

SiNAPSA brings together experienced researchers, experts and students of various orientations, all of whom share a common interest in the functioning of the nervous system. Effective integration of experts from different research orientations and methodological approaches is a condition for successful interdisciplinary projects and the formation of a comprehensive view of the mechanisms of the nervous system at all levels, from communication between cells in the nervous system to higher cognitive processes. With this aim, SiNAPSA implements projects for researchers (international scientific conferences, symposia and seminars) and professional-educational events (workshops and summer schools). The fruit of the association’s scientific research projects are also high-profile publications at home and abroad.

SiNAPSA has around 200 members. Young people (undergraduate and graduate students) make up a good third of the membership. Honorary membership in SiNAPSI was accepted in 2004 by academician prof. dr. Andrej O. Župančič, founder of Slovenian neurobiology.

Since December 2006, SiNAPSA has had the status of an association in the public interest in the field of scientific and research work, since 2003 it has been systematically educating the public about the functioning of the nervous system in health and disease, encouraging interest in research into the nervous system and the use of knowledge about the nervous system to improve the quality of life of individuals and society . In order to achieve these goals, SiNAPSA carries out popular campaigns for the promotion and popularization of neuroscience (e.g. the annual Brain Week, year-round brain exercise, meetings with the public, e.g. an interdisciplinary public consultation on consciousness). In addition, it publishes the online journal eSinapsa, in which it publishes short professional and scientific contributions, book presentations, conference reports and historical records, and is intended for a wider professional and general public.

With the aim of connecting professional associations in the field of neurology and psychiatry with associations of patients with neurological and mental disorders and representatives of the relevant industry for a more efficient transfer of new research findings into practice, SiNAPSA offered patronage to the establishment of the Slovenian Brain Council, which has been operating as an independent consultative body since 16/03/2007 .

In 2013, SiNAPSA, together with the Slovenian Council for the Brain, launched the “A healthy mind in a healthy head” project, which draws attention to the importance of neuroscientific research for progress in the treatment of diseases that affect the brain and represent a major public health problem on a global level. Based on the campaign’s efforts, in 2013 the Government of the Republic of Slovenia declared the third Wednesday in March Slovenian Brain Day.

Since its foundation, SiNAPSA has been a member of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), and its projects are also supported by other international organizations for the promotion of neuroscience (e.g. Dan Brain Association).
